One Game a Month: Mid January Update

Wow. I can't believe it has only been 9 days since I learned about One Game a Month. The premise is simple: make one game every month for the entirety of 2013.

Executing on that promise, however, is a different story.

Here's the story so far...

Resurrecting a Dead Game

My initial thought was that if I dug up one of my old projects and hit it with a creative lightning bolt it might not turn out to be a monster. Turns out I was right. My old game, formerly named Fatal Parsec had a new name and a new lease on life as Isolated.

I was making great progress on it and everything was going fine. I added in a whole bunch of features: I converted a my explosions to the built-in particle system in Construct 2 and had my conversation system ironed out. Everything was looking great, as you can see in this screencast.

The Meeting

Then the meeting happened. It sounds ominous, I know, but it was actually quite awesome. At RED The Agency, where I work, we have been doing very interesting work with touch-screen tables. When I heard we were getting one for around the office I started brainstorming around ways to engage with it. What I came up with was, of course, a game.

The first prototype was ready in an evening. Two bases. Lots of sharp discs. Oh-so-much tapping. Tapping like crazy. The idea was meant to be a mix of air hockey, breakout and pinball.

The basic game mechanics were a lot of fun. I decided that this needed to be my January game. I stopped playing Borderlands 2 and Don't Starve immediately. I stopped watching Sherlock. Every minute of the day that wasn't time with my family or work turned into this game.

Eight days later I have a game that is nearing completion. I am excited to try it out on a big touch screen. Have a look at what I have so far! I have named it Dungeon Discs.

I will definitely go back to working on Isolated for next month, but for now I am excited to finish this game!
