 You really have to admire Kevin Smith, you especially have to admire his balls. Go ahead, find him on the street and look down. You can't miss them, they are the size of coconuts and almost exactly the same texture. How do I know this? Simple. They have to be enormous and incredibly sturdy to try and pull a stunt like this.
Here's the situation, on June 9th Kevin Smith put a post up on his site about a contest he was holding that required it's entrants to shamelessly promote his latest film, Clerks 2, on other people's websites. Entrants scrambled to get Kevin's posters on as many sites as possible. They clawed their way into forums, hit up friends for favors, and swamped community sites like StumbleUpon and MySpace with banner ads in an attempt to win. They were lured by the following statement:
The person who gets the banner placed in the most locations across the net (without repeats!) by midnight on the day of the films release (7/21/2006) will win one of THESE FABULOUS PRIZES!!!
Banners started popping up everywhere and a forum thread started over at ViewAskew.com that outlined several of the entrants efforts. As the movie release date loomed tensions started to mount and a mini flame war started in the forum.
The movie launched and fans got excited about their prospects, they checked and double checked their numbers in the hopes of winning a walk-on role in Kevin's next film. When was the contest going to be judged? The contest page never stated any judging dates, and so all the contest entrants could do is speculate about when they would know if they had earned a prize or not.
A day passed, then two. A week turned into two and still no word from the View Askew camp. Suddenly the thread was closed without explanation. No more discussion, it seems, was going to be tolerated. And so here we stand, almost twelve weeks after the contest ended and still no mention of when they are planning on judging this contest? Is this just a big free publicity scam?
Well, I'm starting to think it's about time that we told Kevin,
"JUDGE YOUR DAMN CONTEST!"
So here's the plan. First, send this page to everyone you know. Start telling everyone you know NOT to buy the Clerks 2 DVD when it releases. In fact, I've made a NEW banner that you can post in all the same places that you put the ads for Kevin's movie. Here you go! Download it, link it, post it everywhere until all the people who worked hard promoting his movie are given the satisfaction of knowing what the hell is going on.
