Surrey Kids

A screenshot showing a camera taking a picture of a wolf.Nothing is as inspiring as a tight deadline. For this project I worked with Yellow Pencil to create 4 educational games for the City of Surrey, BC. We had about 2 months to complete design, art, and programming on this project. The game design was a team effort between Yellow Pencil and I, the programming was done by me and the artwork was done by Yellow Pencil. In the end I was really pleased with what we ended up with.

The games can be found on the City of Surrey Kid's site. There are 2 memory match games, a top-down adventure game, and my personal favourite - the photography game. The games are designed to promote the City of Surrey by showcasing the beautiful natural areas, wildlife, and architecture. The City Hall adventure game also helps to inform children about the different services offered by the City of Surrey and the layout of City Hall.

Skedaddle

A vampire leaps out to attack. When I saw that there were not one, not two, but three different Flash for Mobile contests I decided it was time to build a word game. The idea is simple, you play as Stan, a slightly out-of-shape guy being chased by monsters.

The only way to keep Stan running is to create words. It's a simple game to pick up and has a lot of possibilities for expansion. I worked with Bamboo Raven on this project and was impressed with the speed and quality of their artwork.

Now that the game is entered in all three contests I thought it would be a great opportunity to post it here for people to play.

GameCamp September Roundup

Tonight I attended, and presented, at the September GameCamp Edmonton gathering. This was only my second time attending and it seems to be growing. There was a great turn out tonight. There was a lot of great energy in the room, which was good considering how cold and rainy it was outside.

A Hypothetical Situation

It's an election year in Edmonton. Every election I head out and vote for the people who I feel will do the best job promoting my interests. Usually I vote based on who has the best environmental policies, stance on business funding, or whatever else is at the top of my mind when it comes to local and global issues.

But what if, hypothetically speaking, I was going to sit down and have supper with one of the mayoral candidates and talk about the tech scene in Edmonton... What if I wanted to know what the City of Edmonton can do for the game development scene in Edmonton?
